Marshmallow Fondant how-to!

I wanted to share an easy recipe for an alternative to store bought fondant (basically icing in a dough form, that gives a really smooth finish!). I really like to use fondant for a number of reasons; it is easy, it keeps the cake moist, and it looks really good!! It doesn’t taste too bad either. I mean, you can’t compare it with a rich butter cream, but it tastes good in its own right. And if you use it on a layered cake, there is still regular icing inside, so fondant “haters” get their icing fix :)

Here are the three easy steps to home made fondant.

1) In a microwave safe bowl, put mini marshmallows, a couple table spoons water, and about 3 table spoons crisco shortening. You need the tea to sip on while giving your arms a rest from stirring :)

2) Melt in the microwave ( or on a double boiler if you wish) for about 1 min or so, until they are completely melted when you stir thoroughly. Add powdered sugar in 1 cup intervals and stir. Keep adding sugar until it is fairly firm.

3) Put mixture onto a silicone mat, or greased counter. Knead as though you would dough. Add powdered sugar by the table spoon if needed. Make a ball, wrap in saran, and leave to “rest” overnight if possible. This will help it firm up and be ready to roll!

*You can knead in the color before you wrap it , and any flavorings as well( almond is nice)

Next week i will show you how to cover a round cake… much simpler than you think, i promise!!
