Covering a cake with fondant
So, i have realized, that it is nearly if not completely, impossible to take a picture of myself while covering a cake with fondant!! So, i will give you the link to the pictures that helped me so much, and back them up with some pointers. Don’t let fondant intimidate you!! It is easier than making butter cream perfectly smooth! Really! see??

Here is the link: http://www.wilton.com/wedding/makecake/fondant/index.cfm ( you might have to cut and paste into your browser)
So, here are my tips.
1) Prepare your surface. get a mat, or a piece of vinyl from a fabric store, and secure it to a flat surface. Keep a small bowl each of powdered sugar and crisco, for when your fondant gets sticky, or dry.
2) If you have a fondant rolling pin, use the rings that let you keep it even, otherwise you will have to check that the fondant is level , and keep rolling the higher sides down etc. I just bought these recently, and boy , it has made my life easier!
3) when you have rolled it out enough, dust the top of the fondant with icing sugar, very lightly. starting at the end, roll it up on the pin. place the hanging end of the fondant in front of the cake closest to you. make sure you have enough slack, and then let it roll out over the entire cake.
Now, work quickly!!
first, smooth out the top, with your clean hands, or a special tool. then start working on the sides. If you see a fold developing, lift up the bottom of the fondant with one hand, and smooth it down with the other… this should eliminate the fold. keep doing tis until all the cake is smooth, and you just have the excess fondant around the base. Make sure the base is attached, and then use a pizza wheel to make an even cut around the bottom. Remove excess, and voila!! you have a smooth cake!!
Fondant is such an easy way of making a cake really pretty, really easily. You just need to practice! But you can always come to me for a cake if it’s just not working out for ya!! ![]()
