Dare to Be Yourself

Photobucket

A sense of authenticity is one of our deepest psychological needs, and people are more hungry for it than ever. Even so, being true to oneself is not for the faint of heart. ~ Karen Wright ~

I absolutely love Sarah Ban Breathnach’s Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy. I understand that controversy still abounds around the ‘new age’ thinking that many feel this book conveys. However, as I read this book over and over again, I have marked it up with corresponding scripture, to where there is little ‘white space’ left on the page.

Sarah Ban Breathnach begins her Daybook of Comfort and Joy by having the reader take a look at “The Woman You Were Meant To Be” and wondering why we are ‘Standing Knee-Deep in a River and Dying of Thirst”.

Many women today feel a sadness we cannot name. Though we accomplish much of what we set out to do, we sense that something is missing in our lives and – fruitlessly – search ‘out there’ for the answers. what’s often wrong is that we are disconnected from an authentice sense of self. ~Emily Hancock ~

Who are we when we disengage ourselves from the baggage we have found comfort in? What do we dream about when we untangle our dreams from the dreams of others? Who are we when no one is watching? And why are we not that person when others are watching? How will others perceive our true selves?

This is where the journey toward daring to be ourselves is not for the faint of heart.

Becoming authentic means accepting not only contradiction and discomfort but personal faults and failures as well. ~ Karen Wright ~

Jesus said:

  • Erase past failures. Colossians 2:13-14
  • Conquer today’s problems. Romans 8: 35-37
  • Live with hope. Jeremiah 29:11

What if you knew that a year from today you could be living the most creative, joyous, and fulfilling life you could imagine? What would it be? What changes would you make? How and where would you begin. ~Sarah Ban Breathnach ~

This is difficult for many of us to envision. Again, this is why daring to be yourself is not for the faint of heart. Not only is it difficult to answer the questions…it is difficult to even find the time to contemplate the questions as we slug our way through the ‘oughts’ and ’shoulds’ of the dailyness of our lives.

Jesus said:

  • I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life. John 8:12
  • Choose to live the abundant life. John 10:10

An abundant life means a life of:

  • peace
  • purpose
  • hope
  • meaning

Daring to be yourself is taking a leap of faith.

Jesus said:

Keep on asking, and you will be given what you ask for. Keep on looking and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And the door is opened to everyone who knocks. Matthew 7:7-8

  1. I really needed this today, thank you.

  2. Hi Danielle, thank you for the Bible verses in this blog, they are really helpful right now. I just got out of 10 days in a local hospital run in-patient mental health treatment place. It’s a lot cheaper than the actual hospital, but it has roughly the same “program” that the hospital has. This was my 3rd time there in the past 1 & a half years, so I feel like a “frequent flyer” there, but hopefully the 3rd time is the charm. It helps, anyway. prior to going in I had gone 2 weeks without showering or anything like that, then had an appointment with my nurse practioner, & she strongly suggested it. I got back into life there, ate healthy, started walking again, socialized in the groups they have, they gave me some passes to go out & do some things that badly needed doing. Then was able to go back there & get some “support”. The place is a Godsend. It’s weird to come home & be alone again & have to structure my own days, but I’m praying to be able to make it on my own. They had email access there, but I didn’t really get on the internet much, just emailed my sister & brother. It’s good to read your blogs again. Thank you for what you do. peace, barb
